  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Here are really talented artists and I want to get on your level, so please be honest about this work. I can take every critique as long as it is constructive.
How is the composition? what should I do better in values? Is there too much going on in this picture? I tend to do that but I don´t know right now what I should do better and how.
Thanks!

Hi, so there are a few things that are weird that can be adjusted. Before I go into that, I'd like to say that I very much like what you are going for, and I hope that this doesn't sound harsh.

So, I'll start with composition. There is a lot of lines here, that just doesn't compliment the rule of thirds and that don't really lead anywhere. The red lines show the golden ratio, and you want to redirect our focus to as close to one of these four red dots as possible. You're sort of close, and this is an easy fix as you already have a lot of "empty" space around the canvas, so it would be easy to simply resize the painting to fit into this. So, there are a lot of good things in the composition, most of the lines do lead into the main focus, the hand, which leads up to her face. I think there might be a bit too much hair below the hand. It drags our eyes back into the hand, which is what we want--but the line made by the cliff behind the character, does that as well. So that is a possibility to reduce cluster, which as you said, there is a bit of.

You're going to need do some perspective work, as right now, it is kind of messy. I could not entirely see what was going on at first glance, which is a big problem as readability is very very important. So, this is due to this big hand that looks like some rocky formation? you might need to work on the shapes of that, but most importantly, you need to do look into perspective. At first glance, I was unsure if this was foreshortening done wrong, or if her hand was big. This is likely a mixture of both, which would require some attention.

The nest looks flat, as if we're viewing it from above. There are problems with the background as well, what shapes are really happening there? define them and make them sense of them with perspective.

As for the character, she has somewhat of a natural pose. It looks a bit weird because her limbs are going into the wall, which is her power and I can't really fault it. Besides that, it looks very nice--Except for the foot, which is really stiff and doesn't make sense. It looks like you were trying to make it stand up a bit, but it looks like its grounded and we're looking at it from above, again. This shouldn't be the case, as we should view more of the side of her foot than the top. At least based on her leg.

My last issue with this would be the values, which are lacking and are affecting the overall composition. Light and dark are a part of the composition, and they matter, even before going into colors. As the painting stands, you have taken some advantage of this by using the cliff light to contrast the dark rocky hand, which is the main focus of the picture. However, there are a lot of grays in the painting, and things remain vaguely defined. For this, I just think you need to really get in there and create the shapes properly so you can get more than just some blurry gray. A big portion of this can be fixed with the previous solution of cutting some of the edges and bringing the character closer.

This would be a quick example of that. I would suggest you to have more contrast, but I think that would only work if you figured out your shapes first. Besides that, this is an interesting piece. Your character has some gear, simple clothing, and a bird friend. Hope this was helpful!

Thank you so much, @achronic! No, your critique is definitely not harsh, it is on point and it helps me alot! Thank you also for the example so I kind of understand in which direction I have to go for. yes the hand should be proportional bigger, so I am not quite sure in which direction I have to fix it there, probably the sice of the fingers in relation to each other perspectivewise ?I will work on shapes and perspective definitely more! With values I struggle a so I have to study that too. The thing is I am worried that I put to much contrast on too many points so that the focalpoint gets lost, but it´s good to know that I still have to put more different values in there.

I will come back to that work in a week or so to perceive the faults more cleary because I stared to long at it. I will then post a corrected version of that :+1: and sorry if my english is bad....

A really nice indepth crit from @achronic Mainly got to echo whats been said before with values, composition and perspective needing to be a focus for improvement.

I think values are the big thing you need to work on first and look into to improve yourself as a artist. ( Don't change the values on this image before sorting the composition and perspective obviously. I was talking about overall.) Currently everything kind of blends into each other and muddies the image making it hard to read. Don't be afraid to have a mix of hard contrast values and soft subtle changes in an image.

Great to see you wanting to improve and accepting crit. A good attitude like that will mean you will improve at a rapid rate. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Thank you! Yes critque is a good lead for me and really important especially for me as an selftaught artist :+1:
