  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Hey'all! So i made some Character design for the protagonist of one of my future B&W/manga comic book project. He's meant to be a dark, anti-hero, knight, Lava-mancer sorcerer/superhero, basically creating lava constructs of almsot anything.

i'd love some input on the creative side of character: perhaps any way to make him more iconic? Maybe Different Colors, different shapes?

The Black & white version is the most recent version of him (the other are older versions)

working away on it, get it too you soon.

Meanwhile check out some of my other in depth critiques.

Greetings @viscerated!

Welcome to the forums and the critique section specifically.

That's great! I can definitely help you with that. It looks like you put a lot of work into this character adding and removing elements of their design.

Okay that is pretty radical – and probably the most important part of how he solves his problems with destruction/creation green lantern style....ish – where he can make almost anything he needs for a situation.

So for a dark anti hero he has a lot of yellow – and in black and white that translates to white. And with the ratio of dark values to light ones it rather translates to good if we are designing with mood for the char.

All of this is a great place to get our brain cells pumping for character generation– so lets get started.

GENERAL CRITIQUE

Overall I can see this is an important character to you and you have put a lot of work into the design. So lets set him – as an idea – aside for one moment, and look at him with the intent that you originally laid down.

Make sure to take everything I say with a grain of salt as no two persons Ideas are alike and design by committee can lead to some real trash. So take what you want from this critique and leave what you don't.

First thing – When I saw this character at a glance after reading your description – I immediately forgot what you said and just thought – “...that's Scorpion... from Mortal Kombat.”

And if I did that, then I bet a lot of other people will do that.

When a person's brain does that – generalizes – it makes all the decisions for them and keeps them from looking at further details. That is a feature of our humanity to let us save brain power and survive – we are shape and color oriented creatures first. Detail oriented second

That being said – I've helped enough people to look closer at what artists are trying to imply with the detail supplied to their drawings and designs to get what the person was trying to do. Because a lot of love goes into the details. But sweet sweet love is not good design.

I see your guys' cool lava arms, (which we will get back to later) His emote page, his fire emblem and sick helmet. Not to mention his fantastic cape drip. Looks great.

CHARACTER DESIGN

However – we need to maybe get away from Lava Scorpion, and get closer to your intent that you set out for yourself. “Any way to make him more iconic.” Yes absolutely. But to make it "stand out" iconic, we cannot be mistaken for another intellectual properties' iconography. Your dude probably has his own sense of justice or personal code.

dark,
anti-hero,
knight,
Lava-mancer
sorcerer/superhero,

Knights have 'knightly' weapons, and armor. Evil ones have darker armor maybe, or lava infused weapons. Rogue Knights could be someone who left oppressive order to seek their own path. Giving some hidden motivation. Knights also ruled through emblems and symbology. A weakness could be that since he can spawn his own weapons or material – it takes more energy and concentration to make something more permanent. He looks like a martial artist, but I don't get “lava mancer” from your design.

Now sorcerers can use area of effect spells, funnel rooms full of enemies with lava or obsidian, summon lava minions and cast these spells without intensive rituals.

I like to use the DND alignment system to categorize my characters into iconic and digestible shapes. Your character best fits the Chaotic Neutral status I think. The free spirit – value personal freedom above all and can be unpredictable. They act based on whim and fancy, without regard for rules or moral codes.

If we combine lava-mancer and knight, and sorcerer – then just like when we design character shapes based off of ratios – big little or small – we can design their character type like that. Knight, Lava mancer, Sorcerer, is going to look significantly different than a – Sorcerer, Lava-Mancer, Knight AS WELL AS effect their play style or distinct characteristic design, and applicable traits. Just like the athletes of the Olympics looking different.

Think Big Medium Small for almost every aspect of the design that you are going to apply. Shape – Value – and Color. And when we look at iconic designs – we get simplicity. So lets simplify the process, the character – and add some of your flair from your design into the mix so its not entirely moot.

Think about this too– comics, especially manga – utilized their application and design for tighter deadlines. But if you don't have deadlines then you don't have to adhere to the style choices that manga artists of the past did. You have more time to draw – but I bet the 100th time you have to draw that helmet, or arms and cape and helmet combo you might be sick of it. So you might be relieved if you went with more iconic design. Your design has a lot of busy areas and we need some areas to be calm and empty of information, so we make the viewers look at the focal points, and easily identify them – like a chest emblem, head or a few small details and points of interest along the way.

So how and what the heck do we simplify to get more iconic bad guy? Great question me

Time to stop talking and put the theory to process.

Open the picture in a new tab to see full image.

Sorry I dont have time to talk about colors and stuff that takes a lot of time and examples to explain.

This is not a redesign of your character, but an attempt to "show a man how to fish he'll eat the rest of his life." situation. Take what you like from this and apply it to your character.

Keep working hard. Love the passion, love the effort. Great stuff. Keep lurking, like some posts -- means a lot to the artists around here. Start a blog and join the slog.

Thank you so much for this!!!:pray::pray:

And yes, i had a gut feeling he looked a bit much like scorpion.
Along side with other people from the discord community i'm working on improving the design. Is there any chance i could share an updated version here for further critique? Or perhaps i'll just start a blog of the updated version, along side with other character deisgns from the same universe that he is, and maybe you can check it out if you'd like.

Your welcome!
Nice. Yea do whatever you like. There are lots of posts that do that. Don't look for nitpicking so that it is just right though. Your opinion is important. You keep chipping away at it until you dont have to any more. That's the only secret to really finishing something. And good design is eliminating everything that isn't needed.

If you want further critique just ask specific questions on theory or process. Style comparison with your work will also help if you are aiming to achieve something higher than your current skill.

Sure will. Looking forward to it. Stop by mine and a few others and scroll away.
