  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

So, as I started the ArtSchool end of last year I already finished Term 1 and shortly started with Term 2. These are some samples of my progress so far.

I really liked the Photoshop assignments. Learned a lot of that. But after that it really got harder for me. I’m so bad in proportions… But I’m practicing every day and get better and better… step by step. 😊

Working on Term 2...
Unfortunately I messed up the deformed cube. Should have painted the top lower to match perspective… but I think the rest looks fine… What do you think?
I like that exercise and surely will do it a few more times bevor I continue with the anatomy part.
Oh and as you can see I had some fun with the gradient map
The shading is mostly done with the pen, with a little bit of improvement using the smudge tool on some parts. Only the tube is done completely with the smudge tool.
Next time I think I will try to use a finer pen stroke for the outlines… But overall I’m pretty happy with the result

I couldn’t stop working on the next volume exercise.
The second result is a bit better I think. This time the curved cube looks a lot better.
Tomorrow I think I will start with the anatomy class… and I still have some assignments from the beginning of term 2 left open… maybe I should do them bevor I continue…

Ok, that’s it for today. Have a good time

Nice progress! It looks like you have clear understanding in a lot of places but don't feel like you have to rush through the course.

Make sure you keep practising the circle and line pen control exercises until your outcomes are smooth and well shaped! It seems like lots of your lines are drawn quite slowly which either makes them come out wobbly, or "chicken scratchy", but for the best linewoirk later down the road you want to be able to acurately and quickly make the lines for the cleanest result.

Also you should totally post some gesture drawing exercises here if you're doing them as I think we'll all here be able to better gauge what you need to work on.

so for the deformed/soft cube laying on the sphere if it is laying on the top of the sphere, we would see half of it with the rest being on the opposite side of the sphere and it should be more bent conforming to the sphere's curvature imo

Good morning!
And thanks a lot for the feedback! sashaOwood, you are absolutely right. I have struggles with my linework and sometimes I tend to rush
My brain is thirsty for new information
So thanks a lot for reminding me to step on the brake! Ok, so back to practice my linework. Oh and the gesture drawing… actually I do gesture drawing almost every day, but I’m really not happy with the results. Usually I delete them right after finishing my exercise. But of cause deleting them and not showing them here will not help me to improve. So I will make some more gesture drawing and post them here…
And thanks to Kosmonaut for the reply. I knew something was wrong with that soft cube on the sphere, but I could not name it… but of cause you are right. Now it’s hard not to see the mistake
So my plan for the next days is training my linework and doing some gesture drawing and share it with you. After that I will return to do some more volume paintings.
Thank you for your help!
…but before I start I need some coffee

I can totally relate to not being sure what to think about gesture drawing as I really struggle with them.
I can see what most of your figures are doing in their motions which is cool, but to me they feel a bit stiff. I think Marc mentioned in the lecture to avoid using straight lines in gesture drawing, and that might be what is causing the feeling of stiffness. imo of course.

I was pretty busy at the weekend, but still managed to practice my linework, painting cycles fast and trying to get rid of my straight lines in the gesture drawings. To keep you up to date I post the best attempts… still a lot of room for improvement…

5 months later

After a break, because of health issues, i'm finally back at the drawing board
I still need to get better linework... my hands are always tembling a bit. thats not realy helpfull  any tips for that?
Today I practiced drawing cicles and shading a bit.

I am glad to hear that you are back! In terms of the hands I'm not sure if they are trembling from medical issue, or if they are just shaky when drawing. My hands were super shaky when I first started. I did the pen control page every day for quite a while and it helped me considerably. If you have shaky hands for medical condition I am not quite sure but I do believe some of the people on the forums have a similar issue and hopefully they can provide assistance if that is the case!

8 days later

My trembling hands are existing since i'm a child, so i think it's a medical issue
I think I will do the pen control page also every day to try to handle that problem i bit better.
Thanks for your reply!

22 days later

I don't have much time for drawing at the moment. Never the less I was able to progress a little and started to lear drawing ears.
