  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Nice works! I see some nice improvement in these works already

Hello there ! I did some studies this week

First a set of three figure drawings. I'll do more soon definitely. I was quite ok doing the two first and was much faster. However, the last one is completely wasted LoL. I think I did not get the right perspective. For the next set of study, I'll try to take simpler references but draw the figure / mannequin from different perspectives. I'll ramp up the diffuclty progressively.

I started the proportion class.

Did the exercice with mannequin and as described by Marc in his video.

I liked his approach. I will drill more these proportions as I feel that one of my main weakness when drawing.

Cheers and enjoy the week end everyone

Hey guys !

Here my fist attempt at gesture drawing. A bit embarrassed LoL. But hope that only improvements are coming for the future sessions. I just could not do 30 seconds was too stressed to draw any lines lol.

I guess the timed aspect of the exercice stresses me a bit.

I need to work on my proportion and line confidence. Plus grind a lot at this exercice plus the figure drawing with mannequin.

I cannot move on until I gain more confidence capturing movement in drawings.

Cheers everyone

It's all good work! The proportons exercice is on point and the manequines on the left was a neat idea.

Gestures are definetly challenging at first, but you slowly get used to it, and eventually want to do even more xD

It's definitely something to get used too q-q

your doing great! it's all part of the horrid process that is art. keep going at it 😺👍

Here are some studies I have done this week.

A mix between figures / gesture-pose drawing. Counter-intuitively, the three for the bottom have drawn first. The three for the top have been made after seeing a video of Marc on youtube https://youtu.be/ccsnOhaofAI?feature=shared

I wrote some notes of my work to remember what immediately caught my attention.

Cheers all

The video was a game changer for me. I'll stick to his approach and the mannequin he advises to draw.

I have been cooking a bit today  I still need quite some time to draw such poses. But I am getting something little by little. After drawing a lot I have my hand shaking and my line quality just drops.

I still have difficulty to catch the right posture angle in from some references but it is getting better. i should trust my lines of action. I have a tendency to redraw them. not good :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers all

Your progress on gestures has been impressive, going from just a few overlaid lines to capturing the forms and energy with very nice strokes.
I mean, look at this comparison, great progress for such a short timeframe

Many thanks daceronine. But I have to say that I spent around 3 to 4 minutes for these ones. I try to reduce the time but I am still not doing great. I need to manage my stress better with shorter time

Hello guys a set of studies again around gesture / pose drawing.

I start having a good feeling about global lines and proportion of the body. I still struggle capturing the right angle or perspective of a reference in my drawing.

I'll continue to do some and the along with the proportion guide exercice.

One question to the more experienced artist here: @snakker @daceronine Did you feel your art improved after starting to learn anatomy ?

I tried on my drawing to start drawing some body's features (face, hands, muscles) and the struggle was real ! To what extend the anatomy class helped you improving this aspect ?

Thx and enjoy your sunday !

Heya, just got back home, so slowly catching up with everything online!

From my end I can without doubt say my work has improved as I've gone through anatomy classes. Just knowing what you are looking at in a reference helps you structure it in your drawing and when constructing a character knowing the main parts, and including them helps the overall work look better even if there are still gaps and refinement to be done.

I frequently do a few comparisons against myself to appreciate just how far we've come as we've moved through the different lessons.

Here's a quick comparison which works since it's the same character through the years of learning drawing.

Worth noting the first one was pretty much done with no references, as of 2022 I started using references more, but even within using these, as I understood anatomy better, I was able to give the overally parts better "form".

Another quick comparison with a different female character:

Lots of practice too of course. As you said, the struggle IS real. And even after all this time, I have a hard time working without references, but I've slowly made better use of them.

It's not all cherry of course. Many times I do work I'm just not satisifed with, recently I did a piece I didn't like as much as I couldn't help but notice the cracks. We are frequently our harshest critiques. It's really important to appreciate what we do even as we acknowledge what to improve.

Looking good mate, I especially like how you are including some foreshortened poses here

As per your question, first I really can't say I'm that experienced :stuck_out_tongue: but I do have over a year here and I feel anatomy definitely helped me a lot. Head anatomy and proportions thought me a lot about the basic construction of the figure and kind of immersed me into the world of doing portrait paintings which has become something i enjoy doing a lot even though I feel I'm still a beginner in that respect. Body anatomy I feel will be more relevant once I really iron out some weaknesses I feel I have, probably once I finish term 4. As for now, I do have to say that anatomy has unlocked my understanding of the shading of the trunk both frontal and back views which is a lot honestly.

That said, you can totally make good convincing drawings of figures without deep anatomy knowledge if you have good reference, good technique and good proportions or construction. But anatomy helps you understand the underlying structure which is super useful especially if you want to do stuff from imagination down the line

cheers!

I don't think I would worry too much about proportions right now. The main point of gesture drawings is to just find the flow of a pose getting the proportion and accuracy comes with experience and time. and you will eventually get to the anatomy lessons in the future, but even with the knowledge of anatomy if you don't have a good understanding on gesture every drawing will come off as stiff. Also I would say sometimes for the shorter timed gestures as long as you get the line of motion for example the legs you could just make a quick swish to imply the motion and just a simple line for the feet like this. oh and don't worry about not finishing the pose if you run out of time that's part of the process.

these are 30 secs each
