  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Am I understanding correctly that the deadline got extended or is it just yet another hallucination caused by sleep deprivation? If there's any truth to it then I'd like to thanks the kind souls that are responsible for it.

I'm done with the circle thingy on the back. and I finally managed to tweak the crystals colors so they give out random yet relatively consistent colors. That problem was very frustrating I'm glad I could find a solution to it. I also made a procedural background for presentation purposes. So that's where I am now. All the elements that compose the character are now here and that's a big milestone in my eyes.

Looking at the render now, there are several issue I'd like to address. mostly regarding contrast and silhouette. The character is starting to feel kind of cluttered to my taste which is not a very common problem for me to deal with. (the kind of models I'm used to make are early-PS2 style low-polys, I've never really worked in high-poly before...) Once I remake the few last lackluster elements, I'll have to think about making some cleanup and maybe streamline the design a little bit If I still got time for that.

Also I didn't feel like having to tell this before but if anyone have any advice or ideas to share you're welcome.

PS: I've changed the thread title to the character's new name : Mintaka. I'll post their story once I'm done with the modeling. mostly because if I post the story now and decide to change something about the design later I'l get the feeling of going against my own canon. But I'm fairly certain I won't change the name anymore as I got quite used to it. So it's just going to be Mintaka from now on. ^^

Hi, me again
Let me preface this by saying that i absolutely love the character you are creating. With that said there are a few thing i personally find a bit uncomfortable.
1. The background feels like it is swallowing the whole character. There are places where it is hard to say where the character ends and the background begins. Especially when you look at it from further away.
2. The thigh guard / skirt parts feel too thick/dense. Your character is thin and elegant yet those pieces appear big and sluggish.
3.The area around the chest and neck is really hard to read. I cant exactly tell which part starts where.

Those are my personal opinions so take them with a grain of salt. It would probably be rude of me to complain about things and not present any solutions to them. Those too are only my opinions so don't put that salt away just yet

1.Remove most of the colors from your background. At least those that coincide with the colors of your character. If you want to stick to the sky version of course.
2.Either make the skirt shorter and thinner or go full out and do an 1850s style skirt. You already have the ring around the stomach area to do that kind of skirt. Make it semi transparent perhaps.
3. You already said that you are aware of the cluttered parts so i think you know how you want to solve them.

Those are simply my suggestions and ultimately it is your character and you should feel free to do whatever you desire with it.

Since the deadline has apparently been extended you should probably be able to finish on time.
Good luck

@mrjar0 Hi thanks a lot for the suggestion! actually I agree about the background and I was already, I just forgot to mention it I guess since I was still working on it. I think it's on of those things that will keep getting more subtle with time.

I didn't really mind the skirt but you raise some good points, looking back at the art, the straight lines give it a more dynamic look compared to the "bubbly" style I did on the model. I might try to reshape it a bit, maybe even redo some parts if needed. It's not supposed to be a skirt though, I just call it like that because that's what it looks like. I also kinda wanted to make them look like wings, but I guess I didn't do a good job at it. ^^'
Still for the time being I tried to make them smaller

As for the neck I blame the circle on the back for that, but just in case I had the idea of redoing the neck piece to suggest more the idea of a neck rather than a single piece of jewlery awkwardly floating in the middle.

oh damn <3 the colors
The render looks absolutely fabulous. You know some advance stuff in Blender it seems

Re save them as jpeg maybe? You loose a bit of quality, but it should reduce the file size a lot. Png is somewhat big

So is this it? am I good? is everything in order? this is stressful.

Alright, after a good night/day of sleep my adrenaline levels seem to have stabilized. I'll take the opportunity to talk a bit about what happened this last week and give more insight on the character them-self.

So like I said a few post above, I wanted to use the extended week to further polish the model and make it more presentable. And by polishing I don't mean tweaking some stuff left and right but remaking whole portions of the model from scratch. Because I'm a mad man and I hate myself. So among the redone stuff the most notable are the skirt/guard the head, the hands, the arms and the plating on the torso.

then there's the whole story about the ring. Basically, it's gone. I really didn't like the way it looked in 3D. It just ended up looking busy, messy and heavy. I guess I could have made it work given enough time but, in the end I decided it just was not worth the effort.

So I went back looking at some old drawings and concepts I doodled on sheets of paper while browsing through references. and rethought about the idea of a floating ribbon behind the back in the style of these Buddhist deities, which I like because I want to include more Asian inspirations into the design. Back then I didn't use that idea because I didn't want to use objects made of fabrics (for story reasons I only wanted materials that can withstand the test of time like metals and ceramics) Then one day suddenly I was struck with the idea of make a ribbon out of a nebula. It just fitted well with the character's concept of being the byproduct of a star and solved many problem I had at once. It's striking and eye-catching, it adds colors to the model and give a nice twist to the design, it has light, ethereal even somewhat magical properties, and it doesn't weight down the character. And with it I was more comfortable with making a more subtle and elegant background.

I really wanted to do it, but there's was a problem, I didn't know how... Modeling? sculpting? procedural? then I remembered "hey, Blender has a built-in Smoke simulation feature, let's see how it goes" and after maybe 30 minutes of scrubbing through tutorials on Youtube and a few trials and errors later, I got a smoke sim going on. I loved the results but there was a problem. turns out smoke sims can be very time consuming especially in addition to the rendering. I ran almost out of time. but thankfully I made it just barely, I just wish I had the time to make a few more renders for the detail sheet but oh well...

So that's the story of how I didn't give signs of life for more than a week and got to post my stuff just a few hours before the deadline.

edit : have a screenshot

This is a very inspiring idea. Good job!

9 days later

My entry just reached over 1000 views! that's incredible! I don't think I ever garnered this much attention with my work since... hum...well, granted, I don't share my work online very often, if at all... but right now I'm trying to bury my anxiety and try to open up a bit, I'm gonna have to anyway if I want to get a job somewhere in this century preferably... So to celebrate this I made a few bonus renders of Mintaka and decided to tell more about his/her/their story for those who are interested (as I totally forgot to do so earlier). So here it is.

(Since Mintaka is technically neither a "He" or a "She", I'll use the pronoun "They" to define them. Sorry for any confusions and prepare for a grammatical massacre)

"Mintaka is a being born from the heart of a star. A mineral life-form made of unknown residual matter that refuse to melt down despite the extreme conditions. When they grow big enough, members of this specie leave their native star to find a new one to fuse with.
As Mintaka was drifting gently toward our sun, a terrible mistake caused them to crash onto the Earth instead, causing their body to shatter upon impact.
There, Mintaka was discovered by the humans. When Mintaka tried to plead with these strange creatures if they could fix their shattered body and send it back among the stars, the humans believed hearing the voices of angels or goddesses and started to worship the pile of crystal shards. People from all over the continent came with various offerings of their own making. Golden wings, sky charts, a new body, charms and various contraptions supposed to help their deity go back home. But nothing worked, their technology was far too primitive.
It seemed the humans were doomed to fail all of their attempts. But despite that, Mintaka cherished their time with the humans which awoke an unending curiosity for their knowledge and cultures. But as the years and centuries pass, Mintaka was getting weaker and weaker due to the lack of radiations to feed on. Their body began to decompose in a thin stream of stardust. To keep their energy Mintaka decided to fall in a deep slumber until humanity matures enough to finally be able send them back to the stars. Nobody knows where they're hidden, how long will they sleep or even if they'll wake up one day."

So there you go, that's the story. Aside from that Mintaka has the ability to bend and alter all forms of light waves that pass through their body. which includes effects such as becoming opaque or invisible, turn infrared light into gamma rays, focusing light into a laser-thin ray and some more. The Nebula around them is actually a sign that they're dying. They dream to be one with the sun, they're around 11 feet high, weight about 3000 lbs, they love aurora borealis and hate the ozone layer.

And now have some bonus renders I did ^^ (I think I messed up the smoke resolution in some of them...oh well.)

there you go, hopefully you'll like it ^^
