  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?

  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations.To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color.The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character.My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell.You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs.This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. I feel I have not improved for a few years now, as I have spent my leisure time playing games or drawing simple fanart that hasn't challenged my ability, instead of studying sincerely and working out to keep those drawing muscles strong! I haven't been fulfilling my passion to study art seriously and with a lot of love, so I've decided to make a change! This will be the record of my quest for improvement.

Critique is very much desired. All aspects of painting - value, light, colour, form, composition, anatomy - they all feel like a struggle for me right now. The number 1 struggle is finishing a painting in the first place. I greatly appreciate any feedback you can provide so that I may work to be a better artist. I'm excited that I'll be able to use it to head in the right direction and finish the projects I start. Thanks! :blush:

I was working on some thumbnails on the bus this morning and really hitting a wall with it. I think I'm not spending enough time on the fundamentals or on solid foundational sketches for my work, so I'm going to work on my drawing and observation.

The sketch, where I tried to find the large forms. Redlined a few days after. Looking back there was a lot to be improved on the sketch and would have saved me a lot of painting over and over... Gotta slow down and take more care!



A day later I did a marker small study of the same face to try and simplify the planes and to identify darkest values. I probably drew them a bit too small for my marker tips! Still glaring issues with the detailed face though, and some are the same mistakes I made the first time. Frustrating, but again a reminder to take my time to get the basics right.

Christmas Gifts! :christmas_tree: Tried something new with each of them. Any and all critique welcome, I want to know how I can do and be better! :thumbsup:

First up, gouache paintings on watercolour paper, 6x10 cm. I didn't take WIP shots of the gouache paintings, which I regret now. The process for them was as follows though: Reference photo, sketch, underpainting (base colours, and for the lilies a bright blue that I wanted to show through when finished) and full painting. Here are the paintings together. The lilies were for my grandmother and the beach was for my grandfather (my greatest fans!). I've been painting a lot of small studies from life, but this was much more ambitious for me, both in size and in subject, colour, lighting, etc. I feel that I learned most from my decisions at the underpainting stage, and also when making choices over what Sorry for the wonky presentation, I took the photos while the paper was still warped from wet paint.

I used 2 references for the lilies, one for the composition and one for the underpainting.
For the beach, I tried to make a copy of this photo.
The references were slightly different size to the paper I painted it on so I made some minor changes to composition.

Ok, so this next one was for a Secret Santa Exchange - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure themed. My giftee asked for Diego, so Diego they got! Here's a walkthrough of the steps...

Here's the reference I used for the pose.


Went for colours I wouldn't usually pick (last ones) so I could challenge myself.


"Ok... now how the hell do I colour this?" Tried to keep shadows on the cool side of the colour wheel. Generally felt like I had no idea what I was doing.

After saying I was done with the image at the stage that makes up the last image in the gif above, and posting it to twitter... I felt like it wasn't working quite how I'd wanted so I came back a day later and changed some things, like making the stripes on his jersey thicker, which you can see below. I only had a day to paint it in so given that, I'm very happy with how it came out. Buuuuuut that doesn't mean I can't see a lot of issues, with the sketchy/scrappiness of it, with colour, tangents, anatomy, value... There's a lot still to improve. Values, as always! My nemesis!

In the end, I'm trying to get away from anime stuff, but I would still like to be able to use colour in an awesome way in styalised work like 零/Rei or Kibstar. So much to practise and so little time. If you have any critique on this piece, I'd really love to hear it!

Thinking about stroke economy.... Ermmm... haha I really wasn't prepared for how few strokes 50 really is! So the top 3 were my first attempts and in 50 strokes I was getting nothing useful. I wasn't learning that much - maybe just that building faces needed more brushstrokes than you'd expect. I thought maybe it was a little TOO restrictive? So for the bottom 2 I said to myself, let's go halfway, what's the minimum number of brushstrokes that I can make while at the same time creating a picture that I feel communicates what I want?

So as you can see, at least double that 50 stroke limit. In future I'll give this another shot and restrict myself to 100 strokes and see how it goes.

Felt crummy today so did some reference gathering for art war and then an indulgent fanart/experiment thing...

Starting to read JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5. Took the panels on the right hand side page and animated them a little. Wondered what Aerosmith landing would look like in motion. I like how the rotors look (slowing down) and the smoke too.

I've never animated anything before really, just some old pixel icon things years ago so I'm pretty happy, but I'd like to do more in future to work on overlapping frames, secondary animation, actually different art in each frame haha.

Happy new year everyone! :tada:

Started it off with gouache studies

Also working on a personal project.
Worldbuilding what I'm codenaming The Empire for now! It's a high fantasy project inspired by Islamic art and the Ottomans. These are designs for wealthier inhabitants of the main city. Expensive dyed fabrics, decoration, gold.

Originally I had painted the costumes like this... Where I basically just picked some primary colours and painted them fastidiously with a hope that they'd magically work if I just made them nicely detailed! But it really wasn't convincing me. I got frustrated and gave up and that was a few months ago:

Returned to it tonight, made some colour swatches from architecture, historical Ottoman fashion and paintings. Changed the colours to match more accurately with references. They're not as rich but they're much more convincing for the setting. Critique extra welcome on this WIP Design, colour, process. whatever!

Brush stroke exercise again. Aimed for 100 strokes and uhhhhh hands are difficult. But I'm definitely thinking much more before making marks. Will do more of these.

Animation test of this page for fun. I like where it's going (save timing issues), so I've started colouring frames with local colour. No idea how I'll do the effects yet... We'll see!
