  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?

  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations.To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color.The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character.My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell.You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs.This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Reviewing some anatomy right now and I thought I would share this with everyone here. Maybe it will help some of you as well!

I knew where the triceps originate and insert, but I didn't know how to draw it when the other muscles are included as well. Maybe I didn't watch the lessons closely enough, but I couldn't find that information anywhere. So I just googled it haha.

I've learned that the long head of the triceps will go above the Teres Major and then go under the Teres Minor and the Infraspinatus. Keeping this in mind, you will be able to correctly insert the arm into the body when drawing the back view.

If there is something wrong with this, please point it out to me!

Here are some portrait studies I did today!

I'm trying to understand how to shade and how to use lighting correctly. Also studying the planes of the face again cause I've forgotten almost all of it LOL!

The reference for the grayscale study I did was given to me by a friend and since they paid for the reference, I don't think I should post it here. Here is a personal artwork I've worked on! My friend is a huge fan of this one hololive vtuber on youtube that goes by the name baelz and so I thought I would try to draw them.

I've been doing a lot of studies, but I still feel like I'm at square one? I don't really understand how to use lighting, how to use effective colors and how to design forms for the clothing etc even though that's what I have been studying.

Maybe I'm studying wrong? I wonder if I'm too worried about making my studies look good that I'm drifting away from the actual purpose of studying which is to consciously make an effort to learn something from the reference.

If anyone else is experiencing this I would love your insight on it! Thank you in advance

I think you used all your points to max out color and shape skills. :laughing: Your colors and light environments make the illustrations look interesting and fun to look at.

To me it seems like the other fundamentals like values and anatomy aren't on the same level and make things seem a bit off. Your faces are nice but the body and hands seem a little stiff. For the values, some areas are really light even though they're not the closest surfaces to the light source , like the girl's knee or the guy's arm. Also his face seems bright despite it facing away from the light source.

I don't know if you've seen this video by Marco Bucci, but he talks about how some digital color triangles/squares mis-represent colors and their values. He also mentions why using a saturation layer isn't an accurate representation of the values for color.

I made a comparison with your pic to show how different ways of viewing values. If you view it through "proof setup" it'll give you a more accurate look.

It might help to do some grey value studies with basic shapes and blobs and then do more with with color.

I don't know about that ahaha... I personally think my colors and shape skills aren't that great... but yes I am having a lot of trouble with values, lighting, and anatomy.
And Marco Bucci! I have watched a lot of his videos. Basically everything I know about color comes from Marco haha.

The one you linked is one of the videos that I put on the backburner cause it just made me more confused about colors than anything else lol.
I do remember the contents of the video though. Something about how colors getting darker or staying the same in value as you increase saturation even though you made it lighter in value on the color wheel. My brain died ㅠㅠ

I'll try doing some greyscale studies as you said. I'll focus more on actually learning this time rather than making a pretty picture LOL. Thanks for the detailed analysis!

I don't know if this is accurate, but I was starting to look into shading and that type of thing ( I know nothing about it really) But can you turn an image you like into greyscale to study the different values without being distracted by colors? I was thinking about doing that to study but wasn't sure if it would be accurate. Just something to think about.

You could probably copy and paste the image you want to study into your program of choice and then convert the layer to greyscale for study. I use Clip Studio Paint and they have a feature to change the layer to greyscale. Depending on your program there are probably different ways of changing it to greyscale so give it a search on youtube!

I was going to do some studies today as Lesley suggested, but ended up playing games ahaha... I didn't want to end the day without drawing at all so I tried re-sketching a traditional sketch i did back in 2019.

I haven't touched traditional art in quite some time, but it's good to know that my mainly digital background still provides a good foundation for traditional sketches.
