- Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?in24.5k
- Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. Update on the Eula piece!
I'm like 80-90% done, with the last 10% being the effects I have yet to add in.
Since last time, It's been rendering and refining the details.
Turns out her hair was more pale grey than what I had, so tweaking that extended the work somewhat.
I think the only things left are to just give the hair and face a final pass to make sure they look better than everything else (it's the focal point after all). The tie also needs some work to give the golden bits some three-dimensionality, but it should be a quick fix.
After that I'll give it a final pass to check for artifacts (Genshin pun unintended) and ugly edges.
Top that off with the adjustment layer passes and cool effects and we are good to go.
(I'm making that sound easy, but it's probably not going to be the cakewalk I expect it to be).
I think it's coming along pretty nicely. There's definitely good progress since the last update. It's going to be really cool once it's done. I mean it already looks cool
@cedricgo Appreciate the support! So close to the end now
And so that concludes this chapter.
Eula is complete.
Eula did not come how in-game, so this is now my mourning piece. (jk)
The FX did not take long at all to finish and since I've gotten a bit better att choosing my colors and values to begin with, not much was needed to adjust. I still did adjust it a bit though.
By the end I felt like I started to get into shape. My process improved and I stopped worrying about stuff that got a little painterly - which is what I wanted in the first place.
As cliché as it may sounds, I believe I need better brushes. At the very least an improved "main" brush. The one I use now is just an oval one I made for myself in the past, but it sometimes leaves edges where I don't want them.
I don't think the super rendered look that artist like Sakimi-chan uses is for me. Painterly and a bit messier allows for more breathing room and "happy accidents". That's something I much rather would work with.
What's next?
- More sketches and rougher work most likely.
- There was a piece I started working on in which my OC Grith was tinkering with some tech in his room. That one is the next "big one" for me.
I got sick around the time of the previous post.
Because of that I had to focus my now reduced energy on work only and leave the personal grind for later. With that out of the way, here's what's new:
During work I ended up developing a new process/workflow for quickly sketching and coloring to bring ideas to life. This method heavily relies on masks and the lasso tool to systematically block out colors as fast as possible.
The end result is rather rough around the edges (although the edges themselves are crisp af), but it does such a great job at "getting to the point". If I want to, I can then take it further than this or leave as is - in this case I'm already satisfied with it.
Sidenote, I saw my OC for the second time at the Cubebrush Instagram/Twitter. I'm happy that's what they chose to share and how well it was recieved, as tend to use my own personality traits as a foundation for the OCs I make. This results in them being hold a greater personal value to me than any of my other works. Thanks for helping me share it with the world!
Looks great! It's cool that you learned a few things about your workflow and things you want to do thanks to working on it. I look forward to see what you'll come up with next
@cedricgo I have a hard time settling for one set process. I tend to have some methods I favor and enjoy using, but not really a set workflow that goes all the way from start to finish. Constantly trying out new ways has become part of my daily routine from an artistic standpoint!
Once again glad to have you around!
That last illustration is pretty cool! A bit of a different style than your other art, but still very nice. I love the ambience and the contrast of colors between the blues and oranges.
And I can relate with what you said about not necessarely having one process. I am a bit all over the place too in terms of technique and I have a hard time staying with only one approach, whether it's with traditional or digital mediums. NIce to see someone else like that
12 days later
Haven't done much painting/drawing for myself as of lately, so here's a DITYS that I found on Twitter.
I was working on a project where the client asked for a lot more out of nowhere and on top of that they were entering crunch... This led to a pretty intense weekend of work, but I'd like to think I did well.
Unfortunately, I am not allowed to post the work I have done for them in my portfolio, even when the product is out (as is the case with one thing that's already out and done). This kind of stinks and I'm not sure if it's fine or not to just mention what I did.
Anyways, back to what I started with. Once all that work was done, I saw this DITYS by @inesmbravo on Twitter [link] and decided to spend my free time on it.
One of the main challenges for me was to not stress over details that weren't in her face or on her chest. As that would most likely be the area where your eyes start, everything else could be a little messier with more noticeable brushstrokes. I say that, but she's pretty evenly rendered throughout.
The biggest success with this one was the jacket. It's a bit poofier than the one Inês originally drew and it's full of visible and confident brush marks. I used the combo of "large confident brushstroke + smudge tool" a lot on this piece and it's really helped me prevent me from overrendering.
It got really hot all of a sudden (summer snuck up on me), which made it really difficult to sit down and draw on my computer. The heat from outside, paired with the furnace that is my computer during summer...
Anyways, now that it finally cooled down a little I updated one of my OCs - Pam.
She previously was more of a petite thing, with little to no story being conveyed through her outfit. It no longer fit what I want her to be, so it was time for a change.
The more tactical and androgynous look of the new version is way more in line with how I see her. While she keeps her two guns, she's meant to be a very capable sniper - hence the shift from coat to cloak.
Since I chose not to paint/render her as much as before, she does feel a bit lacking... for now. I'm certain I'll be giving her a dedicated illustration soon enough.
Btw, she's meant to be rather short. She feels a bit taller in the new version, but she's most certainly like 160 - 170cm tall (5'2 - 5'5 ish).
@truemakar Appreciated! Thanks for stopping by!
1 month later
It's been a while.
Over a month to be precise.
Work, a one week vacation and the release of the Inazuma region in Genshin Impact are the main reasons as to why I've not really done any art for myself. Sure, I did a lot of cool art for work, but that wasn't really for myself, nor am I allowed to show it - so I might as well just say that I didn't make any new art since last month.
I saw this template on Twitter (by @GurepyonArt) and was really intrigued by it. From my point of view, successfully filling this out would help me solidfy more of my characters' personalities (and to some degree their artistic capabilities).
"How would they choose to portray themselves?"
"What techniques would they use?"
"How good is theyr technical skill?"
Overall I found it to be a success. If you want to look into it, some of the character interactions can be seen:
- Setsuna and Bii grew up together, so it's likely that they drew a lot during that time and learned from each other.
- Jarnhand tried to draw like Seraphelle, but his version is much more blocky and rough compared to her rounded shapes, which does reflect some of their personality traits.
- Grith is quite skilled at drawing from life, since he has a lot of experience from drawing blueprints for his gadgets.
- Pam's entire personality is on display, being the grumpy and edgy kid of the group.
- Lastly, the oldest 3 characters used colors in their drawings, and the youngest 3 didn't. Perhaps it is a reflection of how they view the world, with the older ones recognizing it as being more nuanced - as opposed to the much more straight forward worldview of the younger characters.
Anyways, it's just a for-fun piece. Doesn't need to be that deep.
There's a lot of work coming in, so it might take a while until I get the opportunity to draw for myself again.
