  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

In my shared sketches below you can see two examples. The hands were drawn within 1 minute each with a 0,5mm pencil. Each sketch is exactly the same size as my own hand. You said you're using a narrow pencil, but I don't think that should limit your shading much. I solved it with simple cross hatching. The darker lines are just more lines piled up making it appear darker.

In the second sketch I took my time focusing on anatomy. Sketched a Roman statue. I don't think you get enough time in your course to draw it like this, though, and you probably shouldn't.

Hope this helps.. :sunny:

And @cherrylimeade is right. Try everything! Even the materials you don't like.

Only one minute? Amazing speed! O_o I suppose, that it'll take me 5-10 minutes to draw like this, but thank you for advice, I finally get it.
At first I thought about this or this kind of shadowing and actually I would like to achieve it, but again, those charcoal transferring to other paper just drives me crazy.

Hi there, here are some new stuff. I tried to accomplish advices given here and to emphasise form and shape, also used new materials, which were weird to me. Any critique is appreciated.

Ok, today I did really interesting but weird exercise, I've decided to repaint an extremely gorgeous painting, done by Offutt Karen, with only 50 brush strokes.
It was so complicated and challenging! In fact, to accomplish this you should think in advance
about ANYTHING: type of brush, colour, direction, thickness, even sometimes I did curved strokes to minimise their quantity.
All in all, I've been painting this for 3 hours, which means 3-4 minutes per stroke. I made me feel like a turtle...
I think, I'll do this exercise more to boost my confidence and speed.

Does this site support GIF animation? I'm thinking to convert this study into animated process.

And here is my painting process. I think, that some day I will definitely repeat this challenge.

This is a very interesting exercise! Really brings out the thinking side of the brain

That last exercise, it's awesome! I'd like to do it myself.
As for the gestures they are good. I found really helpful focusing on one part of the body at time. Feet, legs, hands and so on, this made me more comfortable with drawing the human body.
In the last image, the woman seems to have more body fat in some of the poses, and less in others, maybe you can try to focus more on proportions. Good work! :penguin:

Wow, that is a really interesting challenge, it must really make you think what you do.

Of course, you should try it. I think it may be affordable even in drawing, just use not 50 but 10 strokes - this'll boost even understanding of your dry material (esp charcoal or pastel).
I'm not sure that I understand to correctly. But to my mind, focusing on one part of the body is good when you study anatomy at home or doing photo sketching (so you could adjust your drawing time to at leas 10 mins). But I drew from life and my main focus was to get figure pose right (and at least proportions of the human body) within 2-5 minutes.
Yes I'm planning to focus some day only on body parts alone, not to draw a whole model, for better understanding of human nature.
As for capturing overall body shape, maybe you're right - I'm not good enough at getting the exact proportions, but that is why I'm attending this life drawing classes.

We are all here to study, and I think this is the best thing about art, you never stop, there's always something to improve. Good luck with your studies and keep it up! :relaxed:

@Gyruum Oh, I'm sorry. Did I hurt you? I don't mean anything.
I was just telling, that for that short time period, I can't concentrate on different parts, sometimes I even don't finish the overall gesture.

Hello. Here is my new pack of sketches. Actually, I was trying to use craft paper with charcoal, but I didn't succeed at all, although my drawings didn't smudge, gesture sketching with marker is a lot easier for me.
Also I discovered for myself sketching with micron pen, but I must admit that I can't figure out how to capture movement. That is why now I either draw gesture or more precise model proportions.
The question is, how to manage to draw both gesture and get correct proportions?

I think there's a misunderstanding
Don't worry, you totally didn't hurt me, I was only saying that we are all on the same page. What a mess, I really need to improve my english skills

My bad, sorry.
Nevertheless, let's keep hard work! )

Ok. It's time to post something digital here.
Let me introduce my latest painting (from photo references). I adore playing with colour, but I understood here, that I didn't get, how it works. I mean, for me it isn't just enough to paint, for example, red with just it's dark version, I try to consider the surrounding and some complementary colour effects.
Here I tried to paint red dress with the violet colour on the dark side.
PS Oh. Interesting thing is, that colours with value lower than 10 (from 255 in Photoshop) became a one black spot. Hmmm... Do the light colours (value 90) work the same way?
Take a look on this image at my deviantart page, where this image looks much more better.

Hello, guys. Here is my latest work. Let me tell a little story behind this piece. I caught a cold right after the New Year's Eve and was lying a whole week with a high temperature, without any energy to draw something (besides, that is how I failed the #365dayschallenge again).
Nevertheless, I was only able to think about the fire and the temperature of materials' melting. All in all, the idea to draw a girl with flaming hair muffled in warm plaid had born.
Also, I feel like I'm doing better with hair, but anatomy is still very bad T_T
