  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Still sketching, not a lot of progress on the last foot assignment though.

The perspective is messing with me and its really hard to get it right. There's also the smaller forms which distract me and make it harder to get the overall perspective.

I also managed to get an old mini-camera from my dad to take picture with, its practically perfect.

Sketches while on the train:

First sketch started off being drawn from imagination then on the right quickly looked at some reference on how artists draw the brow ridge for draconic/reptilian characters. After that I went back to imagination. Usually I just need to look at something for a little while to internalize its features and stuff then draw it a couple times and after that I can basically draw it from memory.

The remaining two pages are purely imagination. The draconid holding the sabre ended up looking like Princess Ember from MLP, which is funny since haven't even seen the character all that much let alone seen the much of the show. I find that stuff I draw from imagination ends up being a mish-mash of stuff I've seen throughout my life.

Last one is my attempts at drawing the infant and child stages of the draconid species. and it turned out alright, despite never drawing an infant or child once in my life. The adult draconid is just an interpretation how a recent mother of the species would look with her offspring, as well as having a size comparison between the two. There's also the beginnings of a 2nd egg behind her as I was planning on putting some clothes on her and a backpack egg carrier.

There's a lot of unwritten lore about this species that I have and I really should start writing it down at some point.

I do have a question before the next post: Is nudity in an academic context ok? I know NSFW content is not allowed but there's 2 more pages of my sketchbook where I try to map out the location of the organs around the pelvis with the addition of a reptilian tail. Its not terribly detailed, just rough sketches to show how things would look like. There's Cross-sections, Sagittal and posterior views.

Been a while, the school assignments are really annoying to do because of the automated checking system.

Regardless, I finished the leg/foot anatomy assignments from Proko (not the school I mentioned before).

Next up are traditional sketchbook sketches.

Ref + imagination

Ref + imagination

Imagination

Ref + imagination (mostly imagination, pose ref was used)

Ref | Doing the animal drawing assignment of the curriculum.

Imagination | Playing around with perspective.

Ref | WIP of a monitor lizard (scales are friggin hard!) (also notes during a talk by an industry veteran).

Ref + imagination | Trying out different scale shapes and how they'd look on a humanoid body.

All in all I'm pretty happy with what I've managed to do with the limited time that I have and the progress I make. Albeit its hard to gauge my progress since well, I never ask for critique nor actively post it where people can critique it .

16 days later

Switched over to a new sketchbook along with a pen. Going to be working in ink for a bit to help improve my line confidence a bit and practice working with two-tone.

Gestures, ribcage and a random draconian who has proportional issues.

Been practicing with proko's robo-bean method. I seem to have gotten the hang of it fairly quickly but I still need to figure out how to use the robo-bean frame to make a complete figure.

Whole page of just simple quick studies and notes/thoughts.

More complete method where I attempt to draw with ink without any construction, Kim Jung Gi style. No refs either, just go with that I know.

I've also been doing various gesture and figure drawing exercises in the back which I won't show since I don't think I'm making much progress nor are they particularly interesting. Animal gestures are also being done and I'm focusing on horses, they kinda suck :(. Proportions are off as well as the gesture, so I kinda know what to focus on.

I also have no idea when to stop drawing horses for the current unit but probably after another decent sketch.

9 days later

Continuing to fill up my sketchbooks until I need to buy new ones.

Added in two horses from ref after the imagination drawing.

Imagination and Ref, front view and eye were referenced. The rest are from imagination

Figure/Gesture Drawing! Again!

Imagination stuff

Pinterest figures and some from imagination. The ones in pencil are imagination.
I'm also working on proportions and placement of things since that's what my figure drawings suffer from the most.

First month and a half of my 9-month software development course is done. I had my first team project and it was a nightmare D:.

I think I might continue onto the next unit since I already do animals on the side occasionally. And the next unit deals with more figure drawing and foreshortening which is what I'm currently interested in.

19 days later

Continuing on with figure and gesture drawing. Though admittedly I should be doing quick gestures every day.

Sketchbook

I tried to use a box to get proportions right but it ends up being too tedious and rigid. And some random iguana I found on pinterest.

Setting some goals for myself in a notebook which I bring with me, starting off with simple stuff so I don't get overwhelmed. I've finished the task of "Draw 3 figures" with focus on accuracy and shading.

And finally some fun sketching my race project. I realize now I should've put a bit more effort on gesture rather than structure. I focused a bit too much on structure and the whole drawing/process was very long and tedious. So, Gesture->Structure, and keep the gesture lines light.

Digital

Doing the same tasks I set for myself but digitally, as well as changing up the focuses a bit.

Though, I was very inconsistent. So it just means I need to write down what I'm focusing on so I don't get carried away or finish too early.

And finally a personal piece!

Had this idea bouncing around in my head for a bit, and its a magical girl character for a D&D campaign. I actually created my own reference by posing a model in blender but it still needs a lot of work. The head and eye really took way too long compared to the rest of it, and I'm still not satisfied with it. I think I might do a major rework to make it seem more anime/manga style even though I've never drawn in that style.

That's it for now, I'm in the last week of the first semester for my course after which I get a break. Though I've been enjoying the first semester a ton since we work with C (the programming language).

Oh and I hate my job; the definition of a dead-end job. No improvement/growth, minimal pay.

26 days later

Almost a month gone huh? Feels more like a year though, time crawls very slowly for me which is a good thing I'm told.

Sketchbook

Trying to do anatomy studies traditionally. Hardest thing is shading with graphite.

Basic Reptile heads, focusing on shapes.

For fun drawing, found some sort of cape on pinterest and turned it into something,

Gesture sketching using the technique inspired by Brohawx's.

First page of the sketchbook I've been sketching in. 19/08/2022 - 03/09/2024, 2 years of sketching on and off.
After this, its a "new" sketchbook (old one I haven't been using).

Used a ref of a dinosaur skull to get a basic shape done then imagination took over. Spent ~2 hours drawing on a train.

Most recent gesture/figure drawings. Again, thanks to @Brohawx I've got a much better grasp on gesture and rhythm so my figures come out much better.

Digital

Spontaneous sketch after getting inspired by the "pillow" method of gesture drawing. No refs.

Another inspired thing, I wanted to know which kind of brush to use to get results similar to another artist. Still figuring out which ones to use and how. Left to right, top to bottom: Standard paintbrush, dry textured, wet paintbrush, watercolor brush.

Longer figure drawing, untimed. I'm putting into practice the pillow/shape method for drawing abstract rhythms. Then applying structure

Same as above but shading instead. I really struggle with the smaller softer shadow shapes, as well as thin soft ones caused by the ribcage. That and I kinda don't know how to use the pencil brushes properly.

I'll also formulate a post in the critique section sometime soon when I have time. I've been bit by the art bug recently and really want to improve.

To finish off I'll link to a Muddy Colors article. The author talks about how to approach drawing and how to think more like an artist. It really helped and gave me a new perspective on how to approach drawing, recommend to give it a read.
