  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Day 3: Collect, Vagabond/Merchant Witch
Went for a old peasant or gypsy type finally finding the last piece to her magical necklace. Jake's prompts are really good for setting the scene/mood. Things to improve: take more time working things out instead of doing a rough sketch and thinking good enough, that leads to really messy lines in the end as I don't have a the experience/skill to get it right first time. Also looking at it again now the fingers on that hand are pretty borked so that's something else to work on.
Edit: replaced the picture as the last one was blurry, and tried fix up the fingers a bit. Now it just looks bad instead of deformed haha.

Day 4: Hungy Garden Witch
Simpler style this time around, happy with the character design and more confident line work. Not sure it's quite witchy enough without the basket though, could have tried to make that aspect clearer. Also arm angle doesn't quite make sense. I think there's a theme here and that's anatomy. Definitely the most noticable when it's wrong. Will try and do better in future days.

That last character's face looks so cute XD

It's nice to see you trying different things. And if I could give you an advice for the cross-hatching it would be to be try and make it more controlled and consistent. Right now it seems like you just scribble the hatching lines quickly. So just slowing down a bit and trying to make the lines more evenly spaced and having them follow the form of what you're shading could help making them look less messy.

For example, to me the shading on the cap of your Day 2 character looks better than on her cape where it's much more scribbly.

Anyway, keep it up! I like your ideas

Day 5: Sad Socialite Witch
Hopefully the narrative comes through. Went with the brush pen to try get some more line confidence. Not quite happy with the face, either need more practice or use a smaller pen for detail. With this one and the next one tried to be more careful/deliberate with my cross-hatching as per @cedricgo 's advice (thanks for the help and kind words :D)

Day 6: Hidden Oracle
Pretty happy with this one. Decent pose, effective character design, alright line work for the most part. Thing to work on: cloth. Top half is ok but I didn't really know how to do the form of the lower half. I know the theory but haven't had much practice. I need to work it out properly in sketch.

Day 7: Lost Seamstress/Tailor Witch.
I like the face on this one, and think I used appropriate pens for different levels of detail, except the hands and the maps. I think I need a really clear under-drawing to be able to use the brush pen effectively as it is very unforgiving, or else I just use it to add some dynamism to some lines and effects when I'm done.

Day 8: Rock Blood Witch.
This was an interesting prompt, the phrase "drawing blood from a stone" came to mind. Overdid it a bit with the brush pen shading, I should get better at planning my values (not hard to get better than nothing  ) Think my cross hatching went ok. Not sure about the anatomy of the lower body / arms. Really like the way the blood sphere at the top turned out.

Day 9: Broken Lolita witch.
Really like the way this one turned out. I think it's because I did 2 rounds of undersketch and took my time to work things out. Dress was fun to design/draw. Tried to show with pose and facial expression that something is a little... off with her, or broken if you will. Pleased with my hatching and line work on the umbrella, and the hands turned out ok. Hair shading and composition could be better. Maybe a horizon line to ground everything.

Day 10: Jump, Wicked witch.
Faster execution than the last one as I wasn't going for anything too complicated, and was pretty happy with my first pass. Didn't plan the box placement so it's a bit off. Also where she's doing up the straps is unclear, should have taken more care with it since it's pretty important to the narrative.

Day 11: Transport, Solar Witch.
Really like the concept of this one, just wish I had made it bigger so I could get more detail in the character. Also the perspective is a bit off thanks to her hand placements.

Day 12: Worried Candy Witch.
Took some of the clothing stuff I learned from the lolita witch. I think this comes off more as baker rather than candy which is unfortunate, as I think that overlaps a future prompt. Oh well. I'm surprised at how much better my hatching has got, the trick was keeping the strokes short, lifting off the paper right after each stroke to avoid flicks and scribble, and to make the lines follow the contours of the form rather than just 2D.

13: Scared Pixie Sprite.
I really didn't like this one when I finished it, but it's not that bad now I'm looking at it again. I had a good under-drawing all set up but then I thought I'd use the brush pen again. I still don't have good control over it so messed up the far arm, and hair/flower crown doesn't have as much detail as I'd like. Plus I made mistakes trying things in ink on the face, and messed up the mouth enough that I had to cover it up. Lesson learned: If I want to change something from my sketch work it out in another sketch first.

Day 14: Tree, Space Witch.
Well I actually completely forgot about the tree or else I would have made her float a little bonsai, but these 2 didn't really go together so I sort of discarded the less interesting part subconciously to try get an interesting concept out. This is my best one yet I think, the foreshortening on the hands doesn't look completely terrible, I like the idea of using broomstick for propulsion, and I really like the face. Could do with more witchy decoration though, her spacesuit is pretty plain. Still, less is more as they sometimes say.

Day 15: Relax, Royal Witch.
Simple character, reminds me a bit of Princess Bubblegum. I think it's the crown style mixed with the simple face. Went hard on the shading this time, shows the form well but I need to work on picking values - the brightnesses of the shadows are a bit off. Probably because I'm afraid of going too dark and losing information.

Day 16: Wet Beastmaster/Vet Witch.
Interpreted this as underwater Aquaman type who can commune with sea life. Pretty happy with the big flowy hair, though to improve it I could make it more 3 dimensional - it doesn't really flow back on itself much. Not bad for a first go at this sort of thing though. Not too happy with the shading in the right shark, because of the spring in the paper it caught my pen on the lift creating little flicks that break the flow of the form. Gotta lift my pen off higher when close to the margin.

A bit behind in posting, going to put up 3 today and tomorrow.

Day 17: Battle Necromancer.
New tool: fine-tip sharpie. I like the feeling of it, because it puts ink down quicker than my marker pens it encourages faster strokes. However this also makes me less careful which ends up with rougher lines. I'm sure I could get it tighter with more use, but for now the refinement takes a hit. Nice for flow though. About the actual drawing, necromancer's pose could be more dynamic, but I like the various skeletons. Just should have worked out the big one's legs more.

Day 18: Escape, Music Witch.
First time properly doing an environment as it was important to the narrative. Perspective turned out alright, you can feel the height of the tower. Again lines are really rough and loose, but I guess that works with the theme of freedom? It's silly and fun

Day 19: Flight, Technology Witch.
Not to happy with the design or execution I this one. The character is alright and I like the runes, but I rushed the technology part. Those are supposed to be wings made of tech junk woven together with magic, but it just looks like a mess. Arm poses and hands are messed up too. Gotta take it slow and not be afraid to drop it before it's done if it's late and the idea isn't working. I can just do it in the morning.

Pretty cool Inktober stuff, keep up the good work!
