  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

So i decided to move on from term 1 since gesture drawing had been a habit of mine for a couple months already, i feel like my grasp of proportions is good enough. Same for basic perspective since i had gone through the painful drawabox challenge with the 250 boxes.
Anyways

TERM 2

a batch of the daily drawing exercise
At first bending squares and cylinders in perspective was reaally difficult, but after a couple days you get a lot more comfortable with it

Some nose studies
of all the features the nose is the most complex to me, so many easy ways to mess it up lol

I expect to spend a long period of time to really understand the 3d structure of the different features of the face, especially the nose and the mouth since they come out of the face and you need it to represent that depth, the eyes and the ears seem pretty simple in comparison.

Finally the blending exercise
I've always used the blur tool only to blend but it always made it look very digital, blending with the brush and color picker adds some nice texture and makes it look a lot more natural

The nose is always a pain in the a** for me.. But you did a great job with the exercise! you replicated the nose from each image really well.

Some more studies i almost feel ready to start drawing entire faces, i want to get to a point where i can draw different types of faces that have some personality to them
but first i must tackle the generic one i guess

I love these nose/mouth studies  Looking great! I think you're nailing it

Thanks for the kind words!

16 days later

Did some heads from imagination, some of them are a bit uncanny especially the first ones and i can't really tell why, i feel like it has something to do with the eyes but i'm not sure. Any feeback would help a lot here!
They're all meant to be pretty generic so next i'll have some experimenting to do with pushing and pulling the proportions to see what kind of result i can get

That's a good job! You'll be really good at drawing those with references!
I think I had a similar issue but with mine, the problem was - eyeballing the circles, ellipses, and lengths for proportions- when I started checking them most were slightly off either side- what helped was just drawing a few faces with meticulous measuring and your brain kinda clicks and sees how to correct things as you go later on. Hope it helps?
Cheers!

I gotta admit the eyes are to one part i didn't use much measurement or construction for because i feel like i didn't need it, but looks like i do lol
Time for more practice on the proportions then!
Thank you so much for the advice, it helps a lot

Finally done with this assignement, it took me way longer than expected mostly because i kept messing up the measurements on the spacing of objects
Also i had no idea what to do with the small amout of ground unfortunately

woah its so pretty! i love the little "clip" looking thingies that are on the closest roof. it looks so smooth and aesthetic!

i'm glad you like them because they were a pain to make haha

Some expression study

ooooh this one looks great, though the hair in the back looks a tad bit too stiff

yeah i struggle with hair and got lazy on this one i gotta admit

28 days later

Had to take a needed week break because i started getting overwhelmed with irl stuff
I've started taking a schoolism class about realism, it mostly talks about values edges and colors
This portrait is a mix of what i've learned about the anatomy of the face and values on scoolism
I also did some research about ethnic features and tried to make her look asian, i'd say it mostly worked except for the lips which i'm not really satisfied with

Pretty cool drawing Tony, I see some potential in you.
Yeaa I felt the lip kinda weird too. Maybe try blend lip and skin colour a little bit to not feel too edgy unless your objective is with lipstick then no need. The Oral commissures are asymmetrical too (Right side hook up, but left side does not hook up). The upper lip tubercles maybe brighten up and small V shape at the top maybe.

Here is my attempt, not the best but appealing to me. Hope it help u out brother.

Oh it looks a lot more natural on your version, i guess the v on the upper lip does makes a big difference
It helps out a lot thank you!

Getting back on track, some clothing folds study

1 month later

I haven't been able to finish pieces lately, i've been learning so much about fundamentals especially about values and that i'm never satisfied with how it ends up looking. I guess thats means my eyes and standards are progressing which is a good thing. I'm maybe a bit scared of losing the creativity but only doing studies, not even sure that's a thing.
But learning and doing studies can actually be pretty addicting too so i'll ride the wave for now

Here are some studies related to the Artschool Program and some 3 values studies
