  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Another full head practice

16/12/2024

Struggled with this one a bit more than the previous male head that I did above. Finding putting that initial circle down for the heads quite difficult. Not really sure where to place it, feels like I am doing it randomly at the moment and needing to make lots of adjustments to it as I go - which I feel almost makes my initial circle pointless. Not too sure what I am doing with rendering at the moment, just throwing on values at this point but am fairly happy with how its turning out as I am not spending super long on these.

Starting Term 3 now but definitely will come back to all of this, looking forward to trying this with heads at different angles. I want to get to the point where I can use a reference from one angle and draw it accurately from another.

Any advice or criticism about any of the work I've done so far is appreciated : )

Looking good mate! Welcome aboard
As for placement, if going for accuracy I'd say block in first, no need to get the circle perfect from the get go, I recommend watching a video from Proko or Stephen Bauman on how they do their block ins, lots of good insight, it's definitely the part of the portrait I take the most time on, I find the more relaxed and analytical I get at that part the better the outcome, also, it makes everything else much easier. It's way more fun to focus on rendering that way, else, at least in digital, I end up smudging way too much til I get it right or using some liquify filter XD which I always feel is like cheating haha

Anyhow, keep at it!

cheers

Thanks for the advice and welcome!
I will take a look at the videos you suggested when I go to do another head study/drawing : )
I agree with you that being more relaxed and analytical leads to a better outcome

Term 3

Clothed Figure Drawing

Painting Reference photos

So I have never tried to draw clothes before and found this quite challenging.

I struggled using a soft brush for some reason, I think one of the main reasons was that I wasn't thinking properly about the values I put on the page. When copying the references I stopped thinking about the folds/cloth in 3D and "blindly" put values down on the page.

Also, doing these made me realise how little anatomy knowledge I have lol. So it may have been better for me to start with Anatomy_2 but I am now looking forward to doing this lecture next.

I feel like I didnt fully understand what I was doing and I was unhappy with the results from my first two attempts above. So, I watched this YouTube video and I took notes and practiced what was mentioned:

"HOW I DRAW CLOTHES + PAINTING GUIDE" by NIRO

Using what I learned from the video I tried to implement it in my next attempts:

Here I tried to combine the content from the lecture and the things I learned from the video but so far whenever I try and use the blend brush I hate the way it looks. I think I need a better understanding of what lines/values to keep a hard edge on and where to blend. I definitely want to practice this more.

21/12/24

This one was my favourite, not sure why

I spent about two seconds on the "human" part of this drawing but looking back at this I definitely need to experiment with blending more just like I mentioned above.

Painting clothes on a naked subject

For these I used no reference or used a reference at a different angle of the subject to stop myself mindlessly copying and force myself to learn. Definitely want to study this more as - similarly to the first part of this assignment - I stopped thinking about the folds/cloth in 3D and "blindly" put values down on the page which gave me results which I did not like.

I have lightly censored my ref images here, not sure if its necessary in these forums

23/12/24

Definitely found it more difficult drawing dresses and cloaks. Not sure if I am trying too much too soon here but my thinking was that trying something difficult/challenging fairly above my current skill level is a good way to learn quickly. If someone could let me know what they think about this I would be interested to hear.

Any feedback and critique on anything I have posted so far is appreciated

These notes are really cool. I can't provide much feedback, since you're further along than me, but I like how you've laid stuff out.

Anatomy 2 Assignment

I quite liked this "module" or whatever you want to call it. Found it easier to understand than drawing folds and clothes etc.
Since 02/01/25 I've managed to do some drawing everyday which is great. While I haven't done much - mainly due to inefficiency or procrastination I am looking to keep my streak going while increasing the amount I do each day (atleast 30mins would be nice).

Lecture 'notes'

These are the notes I drew/took while watching the Anatomy_2 lecture, thought I'd share them as I'm sharing basically everything I do. I do take a while to get through the lectures as sitting down in one 2/3 hour session and actually focusing/absorbing the information is quite difficult for me. If anyone has any tips for getting through the videos quick while retaining the information, that would be appreciated. Feel like I roadblock myself whenever I start a new lecture as I want to watch and absorb the whole video first before doing the related assignment but then I take a long time to get through the video itself.

1 - Drawing the muscles on top of references

These were quite chill to do, was good to do with a video on in the background or something. The parts of the body I struggled the most with identifying were the serratus anterior/obliques and the rotator cuff when doing these exercises. The skeleton exercise after this one has helped me understand a little bit better but it still feels like my weakest point.

I started with lean muscular males for my references and moved onto female references afterwards as they were more difficult.

I got my references from pinterest, art station and plain old Google.

??/01/25

Overall I think I did a decent job at identifying the muscles here. Looking at them now a few of them are definitely a bit off but the activity itself did help me learn (i think). If anyone sees anything glaringly wrong or weird please let me know

2 - Drawing the muscles on top of skeletons

I enjoyed this part of the assignment the most. I tried to do this exercise at lots of different angles. I think I definitely should have got references in more varied poses but struggled to find good ones and gave up quite quickly and just used what I had.

Another thing is that I did add "shading" to these but it was thrown on quite haphazardly without lots of thought as when I had reached that point I was wanting to move onto the next pose or angle.

I don't have exact dates for these but they were drawn between 10/01/25 - 22/01/25

One of the main things I noticed when working through these was that I needed to work on my line work and primarily needed to work on my understanding on shapes in 3D space. Definitely looking forward to going back and trying some more of the perspective assignments again. Thinking I will also try draw some simple objects from reference, then - using that same reference - try to draw them from another angle.

Also I definitely need to do some more studying on the serratus anterior/obliques as I still found them the most difficult throughout the assignment.

Most of these I did with some sort of reference like Marc's 3D Male Anatomy Reference and my lecture notes and some I didnt look too much. When I come back to this I will try to do more with no reference at all.

Not sure if anyone reads all my large paragraphs full of rambling but I feel that it helps me to critique myself and learn when I look back at what I did whilst putting my thoughts down here. Anyway, any critique and feedback is greatly appreciated as I'm always looking to learn as much as I can. On to the next lecture
