  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Pen control - Day 1 .. Here we go again! Not my favorite thing to do  but I'll keep at it for a week and I'll post the 7th trial to see the progress.

Can someone help me with the pressure practice? with the first two lines, what kind of brush do I need to use (I tried so many and none of them are giving the same result as the guidelines) Sorry for the stupid question, 0 knowledge with Photoshop

Just a hard round brush around size 70 or 80, but at the top toolbar when you pick the brush you will see the 3 pen adjustments. The buttons look like an pen making ripples in water. Or an arrow hitting a target. One is for Opacity, one for flow, and the third for pen pressure on and off.

So from left to right
1. Turn on Opacity and pen pressure
2 Same settings
3 Turn off Opacity
4 Turn on Opacity and go to brush settings should be on the right side panel and set spacing to like 30 to get the circle effect

Hard to remember, I switched to Clip Studio Paint. Just preference I like it more for doing comic art.

Thanks a lot for the help! really appreciate it.. I'll try it when I do the practice again.

I only got Photoshop so I don't get confused when following Marc in the lessons, but generally speaking, I'm lost with everything "digital art programs."

Clip Studio Paint is pretty much the exact same as Photoshop except it focuses more to illustrations and comics. It also has built in 3D models / lighting and animation tools.

Thanks @Gibson it worked! I still suck at it though.. the same goes for tracing the circles. I'm more comfortable drawing them free-handed.

I did the shapes exercise, trying to move it in different directions... Not sure how well I did (the cylinder was the most difficult for me, and I think it's the worst out of the 3 shapes as a result). Also, something is wrong with number 7 but not sure what is it!

I drew something for fun as well, I focused on the lines only (still didn't get to the shading lesson) and my goal was to see her resemblance from the reference picture.

@leo.glt95 Oh wow Thank you so much! Super helpful.. Apparently I messed up more than I thought I did  it's okay, I'll practice what you said.

Hi Ola, wow you weren't kidding. We do have a lot in common. I've always had a fear of failure and that made my procrastination worse, as if I never did it, I would never fail. It's hard but I'm really happy you're here! It is definitely nerve wracking joining the forums, I avoided it for a while too.

I love the attitude your adopting, yes it is 100% fine to not be perfect. If we were perfect we wouldn't be here and the only way to improve is to allow yourself to try and fail, and then try again. You will get better! Like I said in my response on my page, restarting from Term 1 has been the best thing I could've done for myself and I hope you'll find the same results in your own studies!

Your portrait study is awesome and I love your notes! They look similar to some of mine that I have in my sketchbook (albeit yours a better hahah). Can't wait to see how much you improve on this journey!

Thanks Alex! Those words give me some comfort that I'm not alone in this.. and it's pushing me to keep going.. I hope you don't mind if I'm taking some info from your practices (like the size of the page you're drawing on and how it's organized) I just get lost in the smallest of details so it helps to follow someone's steps, so that I don't worry too much about trivial things and focus on the practice.

Oh no, never worry about that, whatever helps you is what matters! I'm happy that some of my work can even help you with that, so power to you.

Keep up the good work and yea, its nice to not be alone on this journey. If I can ever help with something, please feel free to reach out whenever!

Pen control practice for today. Circles are better, and I just discovered with the pressure practice, it should be drawn from top to bottom, I have been doing the opposite  I think that's why I was having a hard time with it hehe.

And I did the image adjustment practice. I still can't figure out what the curves and levels represent so I keep trying till it's close enough, but I don't think that's helpful... I need to understand it. And my ignorance was especially obvious with the last image

Things are looking good! Don't stress too much on the circles or the pressure sensitivity parts, those will come with time and practice. I still struggle with them at times, but I've found that I am far more competent than I used to be due to the daily practice.

As for you image corrections, I think you did good. Probably could have upped the highlights just a tad more on the top one. The 2 in the middle look good. The final one is a challenge for everyone, and I think you got yours closer than I got mine hahah. It's a little less saturated then the target image, but I think you did good.

Keep up the good work Ola! You're doing great!

Another box in perspective exercise. This time I did it properly, with horizon lines and everything! If anyone noticed a mistake I would love to know, so please feel free to give feedback. This took me some time. apparently, perspective is not my friend! :smile_cat:

For feedback, it will be nice to see the horizon lines and perspective you drawn to make those boxes (Make sure to drop the opacity so we can see the box after all lmao). But looking at if so far, it's looked structured and makes sense. Keep it up!
