  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Day 15: Relax, Royal Witch.
Simple character, reminds me a bit of Princess Bubblegum. I think it's the crown style mixed with the simple face. Went hard on the shading this time, shows the form well but I need to work on picking values - the brightnesses of the shadows are a bit off. Probably because I'm afraid of going too dark and losing information.

Day 16: Wet Beastmaster/Vet Witch.
Interpreted this as underwater Aquaman type who can commune with sea life. Pretty happy with the big flowy hair, though to improve it I could make it more 3 dimensional - it doesn't really flow back on itself much. Not bad for a first go at this sort of thing though. Not too happy with the shading in the right shark, because of the spring in the paper it caught my pen on the lift creating little flicks that break the flow of the form. Gotta lift my pen off higher when close to the margin.

A bit behind in posting, going to put up 3 today and tomorrow.

Day 17: Battle Necromancer.
New tool: fine-tip sharpie. I like the feeling of it, because it puts ink down quicker than my marker pens it encourages faster strokes. However this also makes me less careful which ends up with rougher lines. I'm sure I could get it tighter with more use, but for now the refinement takes a hit. Nice for flow though. About the actual drawing, necromancer's pose could be more dynamic, but I like the various skeletons. Just should have worked out the big one's legs more.

Day 18: Escape, Music Witch.
First time properly doing an environment as it was important to the narrative. Perspective turned out alright, you can feel the height of the tower. Again lines are really rough and loose, but I guess that works with the theme of freedom? It's silly and fun

Day 19: Flight, Technology Witch.
Not to happy with the design or execution I this one. The character is alright and I like the runes, but I rushed the technology part. Those are supposed to be wings made of tech junk woven together with magic, but it just looks like a mess. Arm poses and hands are messed up too. Gotta take it slow and not be afraid to drop it before it's done if it's late and the idea isn't working. I can just do it in the morning.

Pretty cool Inktober stuff, keep up the good work!

Thanks @zanben, I appreciate it

Day 20: Squeeze, Mermaid Witch.
Wait hang on why's this so good lol. Came out really clear for some reason. Really like the face, effective clean lines and nice eye shape and expression. Only things I'd improve is the speed lines on the tail are going the wrong way, and I'd make the bullets come from the direction she's looking at to make the narrative more clear.

Day 21: Big Potion Brewer.
Decided to interpret this as brewing a big potion, then seeing how big I could really make it. Not sure off it comes across that the character is the one in charge on a field trip, the telescope implies spying. Could have taken the scene into the town and got her ordering people around. Still, pretty happy with the landscape and sense of scale, and I didn't mess up her hands which is nice. Character-wise I'd give her a lab coat, didn't think too much about her clothing.

Day 22: Small Knight/Warrior Witch.
Back with the sharpie for the main lines, and I think I used it more effectively by not going over lines multiple times. Still has that loose, chunky feeling without the scribble. Really like the Character design and the minimalist face, though I messed up the inking on the far eye. I stole the idea of the tassel hand on the sword from that one pokemon, it's just a really good idea.

Well, I missed so many things. But it's nice to see you kept going. You did some very cool things.

Awesome sketchbook. Your drawings are very creative, and have a good storytelling quality! Hope we see more soon

Thanks @cedricgo and @ragamuffin, hoping to continue these even after October ends, then find a new prompt list or some other structure to keep me going - thinking of what to draw is 90% of what makes me give up.

Day 23: Slow Magical Schoolgirl.
Brush pen returns for a fun more broad illustration, hopefully narrative is clear. Unfortunately smudged a bit so that's something to watch.

Day 24: A Dozen, Lunar Witch.
Really like the design on this one, and the use of hatching. Could have paid more attention to making all the moons symmetrical and even.

Day 25: Tired Insect Witch.
Good face and pose on this one, clothes don't 100% make sense but effective overall. Think I might have gone a bit too hard with the shading without having clearly defined shadows. Not everything needs to be in deep shadow, but thinking more about shadow areas would probably be good.

Day 26: Box, Farm Witch.
With magic, anything can happen, so here's a witch farming boxes. Design inspired by Woonyoung's delightful modern witch series, though when I went to go get that link I realised I'd confused her regular designs and the farmer witch designs - the farmers wear much more farmer-y clothes I wish I had seen beforehand, a lot more plaid and cute dungarees than I remembered. Should have been less lazy! Aside from that I'm happy with the expression and the shading, you can really feel that sun thanks to the strong hat cast shadow.

Day 27: Creepy Cook/Baker Witch.
Tried to go with the idea of never trust a skinny chef. Execution god-awful, was tired after spending so long shading the previous one I rushed into inking. Didn't even do a 2nd under-sketch in pencil, going with my first colour pencil pass which was just general forms. It was made even worse by the triumphant return of the brush pen. I don't know why I never learn to plan very carefully when I use it... I think it's because if i have spent a long time on various sketch layers I usually want to preserve detail, so I go with my thinner pens. I just have to decide beforehand to keep things big and broad.

Day 28: Burn, Goth/Punk Witch.
Much happier with this one, even managed to get low angle lighting to look ok on the face. My only issue is because I'm using hatching in various passes, it looks a bit like hair which is bad for a face. Still, probably not something I can solve without buying some shading Copics. I guess professionals know their value areas so can just do it in one shade pass to start with instead of building up like I did, which would make it more even. Could even outline the shading areas like I tried to a couple times (see: hands) to get a crisper look.

12 days later

Yeah, I know its midway through November now, but I'm committed to finishing this. Just one more to go after these.

Day 29: Surprise, Alchemist.
Found a fancy new gold marker I knew I had to work in somewhere. Pleased I got the blast markings around the eyes to look ok, and the environment is alright. Could have gone a bit harder with machinery stuff interacting with the actual experiment but I thought it would cover the character even more than the table already was.

Day 30: Wreck, Ghost Witch.
Pretty happy with this one. Could have spent more time on the background but I think the sense of impact came through. If I did it again I would tilt the boat to emphasise the impact even more. Decent line work, could have done some more shading but wasn't sure If I wanted the rest of the smokey bits black. I like the phantasmal effect though.

Day 31: Friend, Any.
For my last one I continued my tradition of doing a big amalgamation of all the characters I'd done so far. Turned out pretty well, though there is a fair amount of consistency issues. Lots of different proportions and such. Still I think I got the likenesses down in 90% of cases.

As for what I'm going to do now, I'm really not sure. I'm going to let a few pieces of advice this me though:
1. Draw whatever you're into, helps keep motivation up
2. Ideal study to own work ratio is 70:30
3. Practice what you want to be good at. Obvious but true, refers to keeping your end goals in mind and not getting distracted by things that don't get you closer to that goal.
