  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Thanks for your returns @Skissors @snakker and @Pattu_w, it will definitely help me organize myself a bit more (Except for @snakker who is just gonna be an art god without schedules XD).

As for today.... as always some drawabox study.

and 6th day of the 30days challenge (My perspective is terrible, I still haven't done the perspective assignment in Marc's term 1, I really should do it but I have a lot to do, uh).

I tried to keep my lines parallels, but complex shapes really are hard to view in 3D, I definitely have to work on that.

And I've done some gestures (After a long time god damn, please don't throw up it's terrible, I'm still really bad on gesture), things got complicate when I'm trying to give the body a more real shape, like trying to draw the legs with gesture, it totally fuck the drawing, I don't know where I'm doing wrong, on some I tried to draw the ribcage with the pelvis but went also poorly.

I tried one day to take a look at proko's method with beans it went really, really poorly, his method doesn't fit with me, uh gesture is really fun but it really is hard.

Do you guys have some advice about it ? or youtube videos that can help me? Marc really is a good teacher, but sometimes he draws some lines and don't explain why this line and not another what lost me a bit..

   30 s :

       And 1 min:

Here check this one out

This hole channel is great for learning gesture, pretty awesome advices.
I remembered that I actually did the challenge that him mentioned in the video and it truly helps a lot, hope it helps.

Yo that video is really nice

As for my personal experience, I had a really iffy feeling about my first gestures as well XD

I think pushing through that phase is important, it's ok if it's not how you like it at first, but keep at it and it will improve. Also, try experimenting. Nothing stops you from trying the gestures at longer times or using a thicker brush. For example, just increasing the overall size of the hard round brush and adding pressure-size can yield expressive lines and is easier to work with in my experience

For the complex shapes, you can try drawing the complex silhouette on one side of a cube and draw the cube in perspective, then more or less eye ball or trace towards vanishing points for nice results, of course, there are much more technical ways to do complex shapes out there once that's no fun

cheers and keep at it!

In term of finding your gesture style, I suggest watch others YT video and try to experiment with that style and ask is there any particular part of this YT style you like from it. And keep on experimentation! Gesture drawing is more preferential exercise than a structural/judgemental exercise.

So for example, I use a blend of FORCE and Proko method of doing gesture. i tried other gesture methods I found on YT but it's just doesn't work for me when I tried their gesture method. Like I said, I kept on experimenting and add on which part I like about their methods to make my gesture drawing. Hope that helps!

Uh god, thanks again for your returns guys @snakker @Gordon003 and @Pattu_w
So I followed your advices and, I ended up spending 2 hours studying gesture from the video from pattu_w and this one https://youtu.be/bzOUe6LbUUs from proko + my 30 daily min of gesture

I'm experimenting, and it's still terrible, it's only day 2, but, damn, I thought I had it, and the moment I put my pen on the paper it went terrible XD

I got this.

I also drew the day 7 from the 30 days challenge

My perspective is kinda bad, I tried to follow snakker tips, helped me a bit, but I lack technical skills, I need to work on that....

Though, this leads to one question.

Today I drew for 7 to 8 hours, I continue my drawabox things, studied and made gestures, drew the day 7 and some perspective and I'm questioning myself, Am I doing enough in those 8 hours?

Or Am I too slow? I know it's a process that I have to enjoy but, Am I not too slow ?
I still haven't drawn something human, even tho It's what I want to do, but I can't, look at my boxes in perspective, wtf would a guy looks like if I draw him xD.

But for one hour I was doing nothing but wondering what to do (after drawabox and gestures), perspective ? proportions? draw mannequins over references?

I wonder what to do and I ended up doing nothing, cause I wanted to do everything.. do you have advice for that ? Or something you would do ?

My goal is to become an illustrator, I still haven't done a lot for it.... even tho I keep drawing, I know I will succeed, the impostor syndrome propbably speak..

I should probably allow more time to draw something at the end of the day, for fun, I don't know how though

See you as always, tomorrow

Hey there, wow, 8 hours is plenty. As long as you are having fun though it’s good 😃 just be wary of frustration and burnout

Now starting with the gestures, they are not bad. Ask yourself what you want to achieve with them, maybe try more dynamic poses in your references and add some more time so you can add a little more detail and have more time to study the gesture - you don’t have to do them super fast when you are beginning if you don’t want to, get a feel for them first. I find quickposes.com a good source or some gesture reference pack. Also, how big are you drawing them? Using the whole canvas, having a large draeing surface and propping it up at an angle or upright can help you draw from the shoulder, alternatively using a low table and using the elbow. The wrist I find hard to use for it.

And as for how much you do… I don’t know the answer to that one 😅 I know that practice should be tailored to what you want to achieve and drawing basic shapes like cubes cylinders etc is very useful as well as drawing the figure itself. Hell maybe even copy some artists, see how they tackle drawing the figures and see if you like their style - have fin with it

Cheers and keep it up

Well I am having a lot of fun !
For now me and myself are working togheter, when the little voice come I put her outside of the house, I won't fail again.

I should time my self a bit more yeah, I tend to listen and do only what marc's says in his program, when i'm not doing that it's stressful for some reasons.

I bought some packs on cubebrush for gesture, I listen to marc saying to pick simple poses, but I should add some more ''complicated but not to wtf poses'' in my folder, definitely.

I never thought about that, I'm using my shoulder but not the entire space, maybe it should totally help me if I use lot of space, I'm gonna try this tomorrow, for sure ( MY GOD I SHOULD HAVE THINK ABOUT THAT EARLIER THANK YOU  )

I'll keep working, and find something that suit me, I'll keep working on DAB and gesture, I'll try to maybe focus on one thing a day, it's not like I don't have time anyway.

Thanks again snakker

I think you are putting too much pressure and expectation on your gesture drawing. Gesture drawing is more exploration and finding your way to get the gesture/flow of the pose. Just take it slow, experiment around with new methods you found/saw and just like let your pencil/stylus flow! Putting expectation on gesture ruins the main purpose of gesture drawing imo.

My gesture drawing took around 4 months before I can actually see something for comparison.

Draw-a-box wise, I didn't complete the challenge. Just did the basic ghosting and ghosted plane exercise with felt-tip pen on paper for about a month and off I go to another concept.

Your question will be either answered or given new perspective if you are on art school discorc where there are other users with similar experience as you do. Hope that helps!

Hi! Apologies for the late reply, but you're doing quite swell! Don't overwork yourself or overthink the pace of your progress. Some people learn faster or slower than others and that's okay! Drawing perspectives shouldn't stop you from drawing humans, either—I'd use that one hour doing so! But since you believe your perspectives need a bit of practice, you can focus on that one first before moving on to proportions or other studies.

If you want to start drawing humans, I recommend sketches of specific body parts from reference. When I was new to human anatomy, I started with the head, but now I'm getting comfier drawing other parts of the body like hands and/or feet.

Take care -- You got this!

6 months later

God damn... I won't give up.

New habits, new fear, but this time I have elvolved

Lot of shits happened, but now, I got this, I allowed my self to move on term 2, doing heads since a good weeks now and today I tried gesture drawing for 1m30

I got worse than ever, but I don't care, I got this.

Progress so far on heads ( I have a lot of other try on heads, but I was speedrunning the process and they looked really bad, especially when I tried with references, so I went to the basics.)

Had a lot to do today, but I still managed to do few gestures and finish my heads exercises

My gesture still looks stiff, I'm trying to watch people on YouTube but damn, even with 1min30s it's still bad, maybe I should higher up the timer.

And for the heads, It's not perfect but I think I get the first part, maybe I should move on to the exercises with the chin and mouth added (and maybe use some references, hope it will be good (I know it won't lol))

Oh and also I don't have time to work my drawing at the week-end, I have a side-job that takes 3 entire day, that's why I won't post on those days, very rarely though

Have a good day guys

ps : Do you have a tips to darker your line without ctrl c + ctrl v calques on paint clip studio? I want to darker my lines cause we don't see shit when I post picture :frowning:
